Day 2: Trekking Lookout Base Torres  (6 – 8 hours) (B, L, D).

Recommended start time: 9:00am.

The journey starts with an hour and a half ascent with fantastic views of the surrounding lakes and the hanging glacier of Mt Almirante Nieto (2670m above sea level), arriving at Refugio El Chileno where you will have time to recover. The journey then continues for an hour through a thousand-year-old forest of Lenga beech trees to the base of “The Moraine” which you must ascend for around 45 minutes before arriving at one of the most impressive parts of the park: “Mirador Torres del Paine.” From here there is an impressive view of Torre Sur (2850m above sea level), Torre Central (2800m above sea level), Torre Norte (2600m above sea level) Cerro Nido de Cóndor and Glacier Torre.

Accommodation: Hotel Las Torres.

Difficulty: High.

Day 3: Trekking Hotel Las Torres – Cabañas Los Cuernos (4 – 5 hours) (B, L, D).

Recommended start time: 9:00am.

This is a moderate hike that goes around the Macizo Paine, following the base of Cerro Almirante Nieto. Views of Lake Nordenskjöld are seen along the way, as well as hanging glaciers and local flora such as the Chilean Firebush or “Ciruelillo” in Spanish, the characteristic red flowers of which blossom from December onwards. After about 4 or 5 hours of walking you will arrive at the base of Los Cuernos which is considered by many to be one of the most charming stops in the whole circuit.

Accommodation: Cabañas Los Cuernos.

Difficulty: Medium.

  • We advise you to arrive early so that you can rest and restore energy for the following day.

Day 4: Trekking through French’s Valley / Pehoé (10 – 12 hours) (B, L, D).

Recommended start time: 9:00am.

The first two hours are comfortable, with views of Lake Nordenskjöld until arriving at “Campamento Italiano”.  At this point it is advisable to find a member of CONAF with whom you can leave your backpack and commence the ascent with just a daypack, (with water, food, and a jacket). The ascent starts with the Valley of Río Francés arriving at the lookout “Mirador del Glaciar Francés” (1,5 hrs), after which you continue climbing the path until you reach “Campamento Británico” and later the lookout  “Mirador del Valle del Francés”, which offers one of the most impressive backdrops within the National Park. From this lookout, it is possible to see the mountains: Paine Grande, Catedral, Hoja, Máscara, Espada, Aleta de Tiburón y Cuerno Norte. The return is made along the same pathway, until “Campamento Italiano” and then towards the area of Lake Pehoé where the Refugio is located.

Accommodation: Lodge Paine Grande.

Difficulty: High.

Day 5: Trekking along Glacier Grey (8 – 9 hours) (B, L, D).

Recommended start time: 9:00 am.

Trekking to and from the lookout Glacier Grey; arriving at the first lookout an hour and a half into the trek, from which it is possible to see the glacier from a distance. Afterwards the journey continues for another hour and a half, via a pathway that runs along the west bank of Lake Grey, reaching the main lookout which offers spectacular views of Glacier Grey, Cordón Olguín and icebergs. The return is made along the same pathway until arriving at Lake Pehoé, from here heading towards the pier where the catamaran sets sail across Lake Pehoé and takes you to the sector of Pudeto, where your transport will be waiting to take you back to Puerto Natales.
